Superfoods: why you should try them

Have you ever heard of superfoods? It is not a scientific name whatsoever but these foods have been given this title all thanks to their high nutritional values. They are strong allies for everyone and more specifically for athletes. Let’s find out about it together!

What’s a “superfood”?

What we call “superfood” can be a fruit, a vegetable, a plant or even seeds! Superfoods possess many nutrients and are meant to be eaten raw, dehydrated or as a juice!  It has no additive and hasn’t been processed.

Rich in fibers, minerals, vitamins and many others nutrients, superfoods are incredibly good for your health, that’s why it is highly recommend to incorporate some in your diet.

What superfood should you eat?

You might not be aware but you’re already consuming superfoods! Indeed, apples, honey and even maple syrup are considered part of this category! To diversify your diet, here are some superfoods you might not know about:

  • Chia Seeds
  • Originally from Mexico and Guatemala, these seeds are full of health benefits. They are packed with Omega 3 and a portion of 28g contains 11g of fibers and 4.4g of proteins! Since they don’t have a particular taste, they can easily be added to any meal.

  • Seaweeds
  • Brown, red or green, you can consume all type of seaweeds! These “sea vegetables” are low in calories and they are a good alternative to dairy products! Rich in proteins, fibers and minerals, seaweeds are also said to help prevent cancer.

  • Goji Berries
  • Highly recommended in the traditional Chinese medicine, these berries are just starting to be cultivated in Canada. They are known to be one of the most antioxidant fruits. Goji Berries contain many minerals and trace elements such as iron, phosphor, calcium or zinc.

  • Turmeric
  • This Indian spice is surely going to surprise you with its many hidden benefits. Indeed, it is a powerful anti-inflammatory and digestive healing agent. Turmeric is also known for its great benefits for the liver. If you’re not sure about how to use it, you can just incorporate a pinch of turmeric in your salads and that would do the trick!

  • Matcha
  • You are probably aware that green tea is good for you. Well, in this case you will not be surprised to learn that this Japanese green time is incredible for your health! So what is matcha exactly? Matcha is a type of green tea that has been grown differently and whose leaves are reduced in powder. Among other things, it is known to boost your immunity system and it can help reduce cholesterol. Matcha is also said to help prevent cancer.

    Recipe

    Here’s a recipe to incorporate some of these superfoods in your diet! This pudding is perfect for better performances before your workout or to help you recover after exercising. Enjoy!

    Matcha and Chia seed pudding

    Ingredients:

    4 tbsp Chia Seed

    125 ml milk or water

    2 tsp Matcha

    2 tsp Honey

    1 measure of Whey protein isolate

    Toppings: you can add Goji berries, nuts, seeds, etc.

    Instructions:

    1. Mix the milk and chia seed.
    2. In another bowl, mix the matcha powder with a little bit of hot water. Whisk until smooth.
    3. Add the Matcha and honey to the chia seed and milk. Let it rest in the fridge overnight or for 2/3 hours.
    4. Eat with your favorite toppings!
